ELA Homework for Thursday, January 13

1. Finish the sentence diagramming practice on chocolate.

2. Prepare notes and bring your text for the Wednesday Wars seminar tomorrow. G Block will discuss on Tuesday. Questions are below, and I've indicated which questions each division has chosen to discuss.

Socratic Seminar Questions for Wednesday Wars

1. How does Holling change over the course of the story? What people and events are important to his growth?

2. How do other characters grow and change over the course of the book?

3. Why do you think Gary D Schmidt wrote the book? What's his message?

4. How is Hopkinton Middle School similar to Holling's junior high? How is it different?

5. On page 225, Mrs. Baker says to Holling "Learn everything you can- everything. And then use all that you have learned to grow up and be a wise man." What has Holling learned over the course of the year? Who do you think he will grow up to be?

6. On page 108, Mrs. Baker says that Shakespeare "wrote to express something about what it means to be a human being in words more beautiful than had ever yet been written." What do you think Mrs. Baker thinks it means to be human? What about Holling's father? Holling? Gary Schmidt? What do you think?
